Abstract

Två udda Allium-hybrider samlades under POM:s Sparrisupprops inventeringsfas in och provodlades.

Two deviant Allium-hybrids where collected and evaluated during The Programme for Diversity of Cultivated Plants (POM) nation-wide survey “Call for Asparagus”. In this call old vegetatively propagated vegetables where searched for. The hybrids taxonomical status has been unknown and in the Swedish national gene bank they have been included as Allium nutans, Siberian chives. One of them derives from the same plant material that has been described as “Norrlandslök” (Norrland Onion) by the authors Marie Widén, Lena Israelsson and Stephen Barstow in different publications.
This thesis is investigating how these accessions shall be classified and if their conservation values are in line with the criteria set for the gene bank by POM.
A morphological evaluation has been done in order to describe the accessions and compare them with some of the species in the section Rhizirideum. An analysis of ITS- and chloroplast-sequences of the accessions has been conducted by Dr. Nikolai Friesen in Osnabrück, Germany for this thesis. The result of these two methods are that they for certain are hybrids and that one of them (SWE298) are likely to have Allium angulosum as mother species and Allium nutans as father species.
In order to investigate the conservation values of the accessions, four interviews with persons familiar with the onion has been conducted. Further knowledge has hereby been found about the onions history, geographical spread, cultivation and how the use of popular names can be connected to the plants values.
After advices from the Allium-researchers Dr. Nikolai Friesen and Dr. Reinhard Fritsch I looked into the personal archives of famous genetics Albert Levan and Göte Turesson at the University Library in Lund. Findings in Levans archive together with the scientific articles published regarding his plant material in the period 1930-1950 are presented in the thesis. The hypothesis that the “Norland Onion” might have its origin in the plant material researched by Albert Levan and Artur Håkansson, from 1929 continuing a couple of decades after the end of world war two, is presented.
The conclusion is that the two accessions are in line with the criteria set by POM and shall be conserved in the gene bank. Their documented history and the possible connection to a scientifically important historical era in Swedish plant breeding makes them valuable.
Further this thesis deals with the question how the knowledge of the use of popular names connected to “Norrland Onion” can be useful in POM:s work with inventories and descriptions of old plant material.
Finally follows a discussion regarding the social values tied to the ”Norrland Onion” and how these are connected to the use of popular names and folk-taxonomy. The use of connecting vegetatively propagated plant material to specific geographical sites by popular names is discussed and the fact that these crops, unlikely from seed-propagated land races, doesn’t adopt to the local conditions is reflected upon.
