Abstract

The purpose of this study is to widen the knowledge of which species of slugs are pests and present possible strategies how to control them. Which species of slugs do we have that occur in Sweden and where do the specific species occur? Which of them are great pests and what are the reasons behind it? What actions can be applied? I have limited this study to species of slugs which occur in Sweden and focused on horticulture and leisure culture. I have searched for literature in SLU’s library in Alnarp and in Laholm’s library and recovered scientific articles through Primo and Google Scolar and in WebofScience and ScienceDirect. I have also used the homepage of the Swedish Board of Agriculture to search for additional useful references through their publications.
There are 22 species of slugs in Sweden. Of these the Iberian slug and the grey field slug occur as great pests. They cause great damage both in gardens and in cultures. Both species have the ability to occur in very great numbers. The Iberian slug is an invasive species with few natural enemies in Sweden. It feeds of many different food sources. The grey field slug lays eggs during a great part of the year and hibernates as both egg and as juvenile. A year with rich precipitation leads to an occurrence of a great number of slugs.
There are several possible actions to control the slugs. To regularly collect the slugs by hand and kill them is effective but time consuming. Biological control with the nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita is suitable when fighting the grey field slug. Molluscicides containing iron phosphate is effective against both species. The Iberian slug and the grey field slug have common natural enemies among a few species of carabid beetles. Traps and barriers are good complements to other actions.
