Abstract

Our climate is changing and this will cause an alteration in the Swedish forests. This study will deal with the potential range of two invasive species in the year of 2098 in Sweden, given a climate change. The two species that are investigated are the fungal disease Dothistroma needle blight and the Sycamore maple. During the study future climate-scenarios from the SMHI:s reaserchcenter, Rossby Centre, were used. Climate- and map data were collected from the SMHI database, SCID and from Lantmäteriet. It was processed in a GIS- program called ArcMap. The climate scenario RCP 8.5 was chosen, which indicates present climate politics and an elevation of the greenhouse gases. Climate indexes such as, mean temperature and mean precipitation were used. The results show that most parts of Sweden, given the future environment, provide both the Dothistroma needle blight and the sycamore tree with an appropriate climate. Since the Dothistroma needle blight, firstly attacks pine it will be confined to the areas where pine is grown. These areas are likely to increase since it is believed that in the future pine will cope with the climate changes better than spruce. Areas believed not to be suitable for Dothistroma are for example the Swedish mountains, Mälardalen and Gotland. Dothistroma is benefited by continuous rain and heavy rain. Whilst the number of days with precipitation will be fairly even across the country, the number of days with heavy rain will be limited to the west coast and the Swedish mountains. Suitable environment for the Sycamore maple, given the future environment, will exist all across Sweden, with the exception of the Swedish mountains and most of Lappland. The Sycamore maple will probably be more restricted by the existing soil type. The tree specoes prefers to grow on clay, which is most abundant in Skåne, the middle Swedish lowlands and in small patches of river deltas along the northern coast. It will, like most other trees, be favored by the prolonged growing season in the future.
