Abstract

Potatis är en av världens viktigaste jordbruksgrödor och odlas världen över. Här behandlas viktiga odlingsfaktorer inom potatisodling ur hänseende: Utsäde, sättning, bevattning, gödsling, växelbruk, träda, sjukdomar, kvalitetsnedsättningar, behandling av ovanjordisk vegetation, skörd och lagring. Vidare utforskas en odling strax söder om polcirkeln, där potatis odlats i en sydsluttning sedan 1830-talet.
Potatisbacken kallas sydsluttningen, som ligger i Sorsele Kommun i Västerbotten. Inledningsvis beskrivs de norrländska odlingsförutsättningarna, för att sedan specifikt gå in på odlingsförutsättningarna i Ammarnäs som är beläget i den hårdaste av odlingszoner. Tjugoen informanter från Ammarnäs, som odlat eller fortfarande odlar i Potatisbacken, delar med sig av sina minnen, tankar och erfarenheter kring odling i Potatisbacken.
Slutsatsen som kan dras är att trots intensiv odling, där varken växelbruk eller träda har tillämpats, har Potatisbacken varit relativt förskonad från sjukdomsangrepp. I en vanlig odling kan potatis besprutas upp till 14 gånger, medan Potatisbacken inte alls sprutas. En ytterligare skillnad är att grödan vanligen bevattnas eftersom den är torkkänslig, något som aldrig sker i Potatisbacken där grödan enbart bevattnas vid naturlig nederbörd. Vidare kan det konstateras att odlingstraditionen är stark bland odlarna och att minnena är många.

Potatoes are grown worldwide and one of the main agricultural crops. This essay features important growth factors in potato cultivation such as: Seed, planting, irrigation, fertilization, crop rotation and fallow, disease, reductions in quality, treatment of above-ground vegetation, harvesting and storage. An area 50 kilometers from the Arctic Circle is explored, where potatoes has been cultivated in a southern slope since the 1830s.
This southern slope is called Potatisbacken and it is located in Sorsele municipality in Västerbotten. First growing conditions in northern Sweden are described, followed by growing conditions in Ammarnäs, the village where Potatisbacken is located. People that has cultivated or are still cultivating potatoes in Potatisbacken contribute by sharing their memories, thoughts and experiences about cultivating potatoes in Potatisbacken.
One conclusions is that even though neither crop rotation nor tread has been applied, Potatisbacken has been very spared from disease infestation. Typically potatoes can be sprayed up to 14 times during the season, the corresponding figure is zero in Potatisbacken. Another difference is that the crop are drought sensitive and therefore usually irrigated, something that never happens in Potatisbacken apart from natural rainfall. A conclusion that can be drawn is that the tradition of cultivating potatoes is strong.
