Abstract

Colostrum is characterized by high protein content in the shape of immunoglobulins and low fat and carbohydrate content compared to regular milk. 24 hours after the start of farrowing the prolactin- and corticoid levels in the blood of the sow have increased, then decreases protein content in the colostrum, the immunoglobulin content decreases and the content of casein increases. At the same time the milk secretion increases and fat and carbohydrate content compared to levels measured immediately after the start of farrowing. The nutrients are synthesized from the sow’s blood through the epithelial cells in the alveoli to milk components and thus nutrients are transported to the piglet through the colostrum. The more antigens the sow has been exposed to, the more antibodies the piglet will get via the colostrum which gives it a broader immune system. There are two types of maternal transmittable immune system, cell- and antibody-mediated immunity. Vaccination of sows gives the piglet a larger passive immunity to protect until they have developed immunity by themselves. The conclusion of this literature study is that when farrowing starts the content of immunoglobulins in colostrum is highest and then it decreases over time. The content of lactose, casein and fat is low directly after farrowing and increases over time. The earlier the piglet intake of colostrum takes place the more passive immunity it receives. Therefore, I recommend hand-milking at the onset of farrowing saved to the last-born piglets and litter equalization during the first day.
