Abstract

Syftet med detta examensarbete är att undersöka hur travhästar vilka behandlats kirurgiskt vid kolik på UDS 2007-2011 återgår till tävling samt att utvärdera om detta går att göra med hjälp av den omfattande tävlingsdatabas för svenska travhästar som finns tillgänglig på www.travsport.se. Hästarna till studien har identifierats ur journalsystemet som används på Hästkliniken UDS.
För de hästar som stämde in på uppsatta kriterier för deltagande i studien valdes även en representativ kontrollgrupp av hästar ut, utformad att vara så lika den opererade gruppen som möjligt vid tidpunkten precis före operationen. De båda grupperna har sedan jämförts med avseende på prestation. Statistik på antal starter, insprungna pengar per start och totalt insprungna pengar har för alla hästar inhämtats ur tävlingsdatabasen. Totalt ingår sex opererade och 12 kontrollhästar i studien, av de sex opererade har fem startat under uppföljningsperioden och alla referenshästar har startat. Opererade hästar har i genomsnitt startat färre gånger än referenshästarna; 13 respektive 19 starter per häst. Medelvärdet för insprungna pengar per start är för de opererade hästarna 8 290 kr per start och för referenshästarna 9 824 kr per start.
Resultaten i studien är inte statistiskt säkerställda men de tyder dock på att hästar som överlever den första kritiska perioden i samband med kolikkirurgi har goda möjligheter att återgå till prestation. Vi har med studien också visat att tävlingsdatabasen kan användas för att inhämta statistik till retrospektiva studier.

The aim of this study was to investigate the long term outcome of Swedish trotters diagnosed with colic and surgically treated at UDS, Uppsala, between 2007 and 2011. Competition data were extracted from the public database at the Swedish Trotting Society database www.travsport.se.
Return to competition and performance level was investigated with reference to a control cohort without surgical intervention. The reference cohort group was constructed to control as many factors as possible that describe the performance of the trotting horse. The two groups were then compared concerning number of starts, earned money per start and money earned in the follow up period after surgery. A total of six surgically treated horses and 12 reference horses were included in this study. Five of the six operated horses and all of the horses in the control group competed during the follow up time. In average the surgically treated horses competed 13 times and the reference group 19 times. The horses in the surgery group gained on average 8 290 SEK per start after surgery and the reference group gained on average 9 824 SEK.
These results indicated that horses that survive surgery and are discharged from hospital will return to the racing-track and perform on the intended level. However, the material was too small to allow rigid statistics and conclusion. The study showed how the database on racing results for Swedish trotters could be used in retrospective studies.
