Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the stomach contents of harvested wild boars in southern and central Sweden to examine what the wild boars had eaten, i.e. if the feed came from the feeding places or from nature, and if that could affect reproduction. Female reproductive organs (ovaries and uteri) were examined to find out if there was possible connection between feeding and reproduction. This degree project was a part of a pilot study on wild boars and reproduction. The study was conducted throughout 2013 at four hunting estates (in four different counties) with own slaughter houses for wild animals to get a dissemination of collected material. A questionnaire was sent to these four hunting estates to
obtain information on their feeding practices regarding wild boars (type of feed and feeding routines). The amount of feed per hectare hunting area and type of feed varied between the hunting estates. Stomach content and female reproductive organs from 182 harvested females
(>30 kg live weight) were collected during eight months of the year (March, August, September and December excluded). Of these 63 stomach samples (34.6 %) were analyzed
according to a previously described but modified method. During the months of November, January and February the stomach content for all samples to a large proportion (>90 %) consisted of feed from feeding places. At the hunting estates where the wild boars had access to acorns in the forest this was reflected in stomach content to a varying degree (36.5-97.7 %). Four individual samples had a high amount of remnants from animals with a variation from
23 % to 66 %. Despite the supplementary feeding, the animals chose feed among arable crops, especially during the summer months. The overall results from the examination of the reproductive organs from all hunting estates and all months together, showed that of the 63 females, 32 % were in anestrous (inactive ovaries), 21 % had cyclic activity of the ovaries, 19 % were pregnant, 25 % pre pubertal and 3 % were judged to have disturbed ovarian activity.
The average number of embryos/fetuses in the pregnant animals (n=12) was 4.67 ± 1.7 SD with a range from 2-8.
This study shows that the wild boars choice of feed, in addition to the supplementary feeding at feeding places, seems to depend on different factors, such as access to raised crops, environment and season. However, more stomach samples needs to be analyzed and from more than one year for reliable results.
