Abstract

I mitt examensarbete till landskapsarkitekt har jag valt att göra en fallstudie utifrån begreppet Urban Wilderness. Som studieobjekt har jag valt en plats i Lund som kallas Holmbergska tomten.

Holmbergska tomten är en ca 1,5 hektar stor ödetomt. Platsen har en historia som sommarnöje och trädgårdsmästeri. Sedan början av 70-talet, då staden köpte tomten, har vegetationen på platsen fått utvecklats fritt utan skötselåtgärder - förutom att man tagit ned sjuka och döda almar det senaste årtiondet. Det har lett till att platsen fått en vild karaktär, med gamla stora träd, sly,
snåriga buskar och ett mycket vackert fältskikt med överdådig vårblomning. Holmbergska tomten är ett bra exempel på just en vild plats i en urban omgivning.
I mitt arbete har jag velat ta reda på hur man praktiskt kan utveckla platsen, förbättra positiva sidor och minmera negativa aspekter. För att komma fram till ett konkret förslag har jag ställt mig följande frågor: Vilka värden har den vilda naturen, i den urbana kontexten? Vilka
problemområden och svårigheter behöver man ta hänsyn till? Hur utvecklar man en sådan plats, för att ta vara på dess egenskaper på bästa sätt? Kan man förena eventuella ekologiska kvalitéer med brukarkvalitéer?

Teoretiska studier på ämnet Urban Wilderness har lett till att jag kunnat välja ut olika faktorer avseende platsen som varit viktiga att undersöka närmare. Dessa har varit platsens historia, inventeringar av vegetationen, intervjuer med personer från olika segment av intressegrupper samt landskapsanalytiska metoder. Metoderna har valts ut för att täcka in de viktigaste faktorerna
avseende både platsens natur- och brukarvärden.

Efter insamlandet av material har jag utarbetat ett förslag för platsens fortsatta utveckling, med avstamp både i mina teoretiska studier på ämnet, och efter analys av resultaten i de utförda undersökningarna. Därefter avslutar jag med en diskussion kring de aspekter jag stött på i arbetets gång.

As my master project of Landscape Architecture I have chosen to make a case study in the context of the concept of “Urban Wilderness”. As object for my case study, I have chosen a site in the city of Lund, Sweden, called Holmberg’s plot.

Holmberg’s plot is an abandoned, approximately 1, 5 hectares large piece of land. The place has a history as being a summer house for one of Lund´s wealthy families, and later, as a plant nursery.

Since the beginning of the 70’s, when the city bought the site, the vegetation on site has been left to free development. No measures have been taken at all, to manage the vegetation, except for the removal of sick and dead elm trees during the last decade. This has resulted in a place where the vegetation has a wild character, with tall, old trees, brushwood, thick shrubberys and copses and a beautiful ground layer, with overwhelming spring flowering. Holmberg’s plot is therefore a good example of a wild place in an urban context.

In my work I have tried to find out how one can develop the site in a feasible way, enhance positive, and minimize negative aspects. To reach a concrete proposal, I have asked myself following questions; what values does the wild nature have, in the urban context? What areas are
problematic, and how does one take those into consideration? How can one develop such a place,
to make the best of its values? Is it possible to combine ecological and recreational values?

A literature review on the subject of “Urban Wilderness” have led me to identify different factors, as important to investigate further. These have been the history of the site, inventories of the vegetation, interviews with people from different segments of interest groups and analytical
methods for landscape design. The methods have been chosen to cover the most important factors regarding both nature- and recreational values.

After this, I have made a proposal for the site’s future development, with reference to both my literature review on the subject, and based on the analyses of my inventories.
I end my project with a discussion on my results of the analysis of the place in the context of the urban wilderness concept as well as on the used methods.
