Abstract

Human enterprises and cultures have caused serious changes in many landscapes on earth which later have triggered ecological consequences such as soil erosion and eutrophication of land and sea. Forestry just as agriculture has furthermore caused serious declines in
biodiversity in many regions of the globe. For some time negative effects of agriculture has received increased attention in arenas such as politics, science and enterprises, whereas some people actively have been involved in attempts to halt the chain of negative events in
many of the world's farmland. Discussions which include ecosystems and their so called ecosystem services essential for human as well as other organisms' survival are constantly receiving more focus in the pursuit for more environmentally sound alternatives of largescale
cultivation. This search has again awakened the interest for agroforestry systems, which combines woody plants with common crops. The establishment of shelterbelts on or
adjacent to areas of cultivation in Scania can contribute with various ecosystem services which elleviate wind erosion as well as promoting other ecosystem services as the
promotion of pollinators. Other examples of contributions are sequestrion of carbon dioxide, lessend eutrophication and increased biodiversity. This review holds information about the contributions from established shelterbelts to the ecosystem services listed by the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment that are beneficial to sorrounding environment.
