Abstract

Att förnimma det vilda utforskar det vilda som fenomen, hur det konstitueras, upplevs och uttrycks i ett urbant sammanhang. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka landskapsarkitekturens möjligheter att skapa goda - vilda - livsrum där det vilda låter sig förnimmas. Arbetet belyser ämnet utifrån ett västerländskt perspektiv och befinner sig i gränslandet mellan landskapsarkitektur, historia
och miljöpsykologi. Arbetet gör ett besök i historiska skildringar av det vilda, i miljöpsykologins preferensstudier på vilda miljöer och tar slutligen en titt på hur det vilda i ett nutidsperspektiv tar sig uttryck i kulturellt formspråk.

Arbetet tar avstamp i historien och skildrar hur människor betraktat vildmarken från 1300-talet fram till slutet av 1900- talet. Det framkommer att det vilda har starka religiösa kopplingar och att det betraktats som en motpol till civilisationen. Adjektiv som sublimt, skrämmande och vördnadsfullt ger en fingervisning om hur vildmarken beskrivits. Vidare belyser examensarbetet det vilda som upplevelse. Här presenteras miljöpsykologiska preferensstudier på vilda miljöer. Uppskattade element i det vilda har bland annat visat sig vara klippor och stora block. Det vilda upplevs inte sällan i kontrast till stadens snabba tempo och en plats som väcker tankar om människans ursprung. Examensarbetet visar att det är möjligt att skapa goda livsrum som upplevs vilda, dock krävs en djupare studie om det vildas betydelse. I nutida stadsplanering tolkas det vilda i termer av friväxande vegetation, vilket i preferensstudier emellertid visat sig vara mindre uppskattat av folk i allmänhet.

The thesis To perceive the wild explores the wild as a phenomenon, how it is constituted, experienced and expressed in an urban context. The purpose of this
paper is to examine landscape architecture's possibilities to create enjoyable urban spaces where the wild can be perceived. The thesis highlights the subject from a Western perspective and lies in the boundary between landscape
architecture, history and environmental psychology. The paper makes a visit to the history books and their descriptions of the wild, to the environmental
psychology regarding wild environments and also takes a look at how the wild in a contemporary perspective finds expression in cultural idiom.

The paper builds on the history and depict how people looked at the wilderness from the 1300s until the end of 1900s. It appears that the wild has strong religious connections and that it is regarded as an antithesis to civilisation.

Adjective as sublime, terrifying and reverent are all expressions which give a hint of how the wilderness is described. Further the thesis highlights the wild from an
experience perspective. Preference studies in wild environments are here presented. Rocks and stones have proved to be appreciated elements in the wild.

The wild is often perceived as a contrast to the city's pace and a place that evokes thoughts of human origins. The thesis shows that it is possible to create enjoyable urban spaces that are experienced as wild, however, a deeper study of the meaning of “the wild” is required. In a contemporary planning perspective the wild is articulated as free-growing vegetation, which in preference studies is
proved to be a less popular feature.
