Abstract

Det Nordiska fodervärderingssystemet NorFor delar in fodret i åtta fraktioner, vilka sedan delas upp i olika underfraktioner.

Since we in Sweden have difficult to supply our cows with domestically grown protein, it would be interesting to exploit the crude protein in the forage as efficiently as possible. This literature review is done to demonstrate the ability of farmers to influence the use of the crude protein
in the forage.

The Nordic feed evaluation system NorFor divides the feed into eight fractions, which are then divided into different sub-fractions. The eight different factions are; ash, NDF, starch, sugar, crude fat, crude protein, fermentation products and residual fractions. Many of these fractions are
used by the microorganisms that live in the rumen of ruminants, so they can reproduce. The microbes are passing continuously out of the rumen and further through the digestive tract, to degrade and get benefited for the cow,
as amino acids absorbed in the small intestine (AAT). To the growth of rumen microbes shall be as effective as possible, it needs to be balance between the proportion of soluble carbohydrates and rumen degradable protein, called protein balance in the rumen (PBV).

There are various ways to improve forage crude protein concentration. Nitrogen fertilization of grass-dominated grassland can increase grass content of crude protein and readily soluble nitrogen. It can also be achieved by increasing the proportion of clover in the grassland.
Early harvest results in higher digestibility and higher proportion of soluble carbohydrates, rumen degradable crude protein. It also gives a low proportion of fiber in the feed which promotes high rate of passage through the rumen. All this promotes the formation of microbes in the rumen. Fast and effective drying of forage minimize the plant's own protein-degrading enzymes, proteases, degradation of proteins in forage and retains thus as much nutrition as possible. You can also reduce proteolysis reaction by
adding silage additives, which lower the pH in the silage rapidly and efficiently.

By growing plants containing tannins in forage you can reduce the proportion of rumen degradable protein in the silage, thus having amino acids absorbed in the small intestine without first transformed into microbes.
In two different experiments with dairy cows demonstrated no or negative effect on milk yield when increasing the proportion of crude protein in the silage. Birdsfoot trefoil in the silage shows a tendency to increased milk
production through its ability to form rumen undegradable protein, compared with the silage containing white clover.
Our conclusion is that you should first and foremost ensure that the microbe’s protein synthesis is as efficient as possible by feeding silage containing high digestibility and high proportions of soluble carbohydrates and rumen degradable crude protein, and has a high passage rate. Then you can try to increase the level of rumen undegradable protein in the silage, for example by wilting quickly. Then you get to think about how to supplement the diet with even more rumen undegradable protein from other animal
feedstuff than forage.
