Abstract

Våra svenska städer förtätas i allt snabbare takt och centralt belägen mark blir allt viktigare att ta tillvara. Kyrkogårdar utgör i många städer centrala ytor vars roll i ett allt mer sekulariserat och urbaniserat sammanhang inte är självklar. Samtidigt går det mode i gravskick och detta har lett till att många av våra kyrkogårdar, som ursprungligen anlades i en tid då kistbegravning var kutym, blivit allt glesare och antagit en övergiven karaktär. Hur ser kyrkogårdsförvaltning, länsstyrelse och kommunala planerare på denna utveckling? Hur kommer vi att hantera frågan om kyrkogårdens vara, eller inte vara, i framtiden? I arbetet med uppsatsen har Malmö fått fungera som exempel på hur diskussionen kring, och arbetet med, kyrkogårdar ser ut idag.

Genom litteraturstudier och intervjuer med representanter för Kyrkogårdsförvaltningen i Malmö, Länsstyrelsen samt Malmö Stad målas en bild av kyrkogårdens historia, dess roll idag och dess potentiella framtid, upp.

I uppsatsen konstateras att kyrkogårdens kulturhistoriska värde visserligen är viktigt men att utvecklingen på området inte har kunnat hålla jämna steg med det moderna samhällets, och i synnerhet då stadens, framväxt. I Malmö finns i inte något utpräglat samarbete mellan dessa. Än så länge är det Svenska Kyrkan som bär huvudmannaskapet, men städer och/eller kommuner kommer på sikt att ägna stadens alla ytor med exploateringspotential en allt större uppmärksamhet och därmed kommer också kyrkogårdens och dess förvaltares roll att ifrågasättas.

This paper attempts to capture the way we look, plan and talk about churchyards today. The land within our cities becomes more coveted and valuable for each passing year and this raises questions about what kind of places and activities a city can, and should, afford to offer its citizens. We can observe that churchyards uses less and less of their land for graves due to changes in trends when it comes to burial methods, whilst our cities have a problem with supplying its citizens with enough parks and recreational green areas. In Sweden the Swedish church owns all the land which the churchyards occupy and they also have the responsibility to administer this land. This limits the city's opportunity to plan for current and future changes hence why a discussion about this matter is of interest for the various institutions involved in this process as well as for the people who are expected to live in, and at the same time vivify, our cities. In this paper the city of Malmö acts as example of how the discussion about, and the work with, churchyards is looked upon today.
Through literature studies and interviews with representatives for The Churchyard Administration in Malmö, The Country Administration Board of Skåne and The City of Malmö a picture of how the history of the churchyard, it's role today and its probable future is portrayed.
What this paper concludes is that the historical cultural value of the churchyard is important but this does not reflect the progress compared to society in general when it comes to the churchyard and its function in the city. In Malmö there's no pronounced cooperation between the church, the country administration board and the city as of today. So far The Swedish Church is in charge of the administration of the churchyards, but the municipalities will, in due time, have to consider the value of all the land within its cities and as a product of this the question about the churchyard's, and it administrator's, role will bring this matter to the fore.
