Abstract

Även variationen i födelsevikt studeras i arbetet.

The purpose of this literature review was to by using literature available find out what factors influence the birth weight of piglets and how birth weight affects the survival from birth to slaughter. The variation in birth weight was examined. The primary issue was whether it is possible that through breeding increase birth weight and thus increase piglet survival. Several studies have shown that there are both genetic and environmental factors that influence birth weight. The factors examined in this literature review are genetic factors, litter size and sows parity number. All of these factors had a significant association with birth weight, but the degree of correlation could vary between, for example, sow lines or production systems. Birth weight was shown to be associated with piglets’ chance to survive. The chance of survival increased with increased birth weight. This connection was reduced as the piglet got older but birth weight affected the time it took for the pig to reach slaughter weight. The variation in birth weight within litter was also studied, and a correlation between survival and variation in birth weight within litter were found. The variation in birth weight was influenced by similar factors that impacted the individual birth weight and the heritability was low. Based on this study it can be concluded that birth weight affects the piglet’s chance of survival but there are many factors that influence birth weight and the heritability is low. This makes it difficult to breed for birth weight to reduce piglet mortality and more research about the possible breeding progress is needed.
