Abstract

A phenomenon that has been noticed more and more in media and the public space in recent years is what is called guerrilla gardening. It means the illicit cultivation of someone else’s land. This report's intention is to analyze what impact guerrilla gardening could have on today's urban space in terms of stable changes in norms and physical design. I have also focused on guerrilla gardener’s choice to carry out these actions illegally, without asking for permission, and what impact that could have on the issue of appropriating public space. To find the answer to this, three guerrilla gardening operations in Malmö and Lund are studied in which participants are observed and / or interviewed. These actions will then be discussed in a spatial reasoning theory.
The essay is divided into four main parts. In the introductory part guerrilla gardening in a Western context is introduced and explained. There will also be a brief chapter of it’s history, different driving forces behind guerrilla gardening, and two interviews with the local council department and the prosecutor's office in Malmö. These two interviews have been conducted to examine the laws and the local planning’s saying on guerrilla gardening today. The second part presents the theory of spatial production processes used to analyze the three studied guerrilla gardening operations. After that, the three actions observed will be presented and analyzed. The final section discusses guerrilla gardening as a process spatial production and its possible impact in the public space.

Sammandrag

Ett fenomen som fått större och större plats i både media och det offentliga rummet de senare åren är vad som kallas gerillaodling. Det innebär att odla på en olovlig plats. Den här uppsatsens avsikt är att analysera vilken inverkan gerillaodling skulle kunna få på dagens stadsrum i avseende på stabila förändringar av normer och fysisk utformning. Jag har också fokuserat på gerillaodlares val att genomföra dessa aktioner på olaglig väg, det vill säga utan att be om tillstånd; och vilken konsekvens det kan få i frågan om att appropriera det offentliga rummet. För att finna svar på detta har tre gerillaodlingsaktioner i Malmö och Lund studerats där deltagare observerats och/eller intervjuats. Dessa aktioner har sen diskuterats i ett rumsteoretiskt resonemang.
Uppsatsen är indelad i fyra huvuddelar. I den inledande delen förklaras och presenteras gerillaodling i en västerländsk kontext. Här ges en kort historisk, olika drivkrafter bakom gerillaodling och två intervjuer med gatukontoret respektive åklagarmyndigheten i Malmö. Intervjuerna har genomförts för att undersöka vad styrande samhällsorgan säger om gerillaodling idag. I den andra delen redogörs för de teorier om rumskapande processer som används för att analysera de tre studerade gerillaaktionerna. Efter det presenteras de tre aktionerna som studerats samt analyser av dem. I den avslutande delen diskuteras gerillaodling som rumsskapande process och dess möjlighet till påverkan i det offentliga rummet.
