Abstract

A third of Sweden’s private forests owners are over 65 years old but only 12 percent are planning intergenerational transfer of the forest property within the next few years. Intergenerational transfer of forest properties is considered to be a hard and complex question because of the many aspects; economy, law and emotions. Working with this question can be a way for a timber procurer to create new contacts. The purpose of this study was to survey the general attitude and experience of intergenerational of forest properties among the timber procurers at the Västerbotten region, SCA Skog. Their thoughts and concerns about skill needs and work methods were studied to identify and develop good work methods. Five different timber procurers were interviewed. All of the interviewed timber procurers identified the question important to ensure the future wood supply. Working with it was experienced differently depended what level of knowledge the timber procurer had. All of the timber procurers emphasized the need of giving the process time. Some of them considered an advantage to have a structure when working with the question. They saw possibilities in developing the work methods for reaching the younger generation. The positive attitude to the question gives potential to develop it. For a new employee it could be useful to get an education within the subject and increase the communication with their colleagues. To make it easier start working with the question it could help to have a structure. Audience targeting can help reaching the younger generation.A third of Sweden’s private forests owners are over 65 years old but only 12 percent are planning intergenerational transfer of the forest property within the next few years.
