Abstract

Entomopathogenic fungi have potential to be used in biological control of aphids. During the right circumstances the fungi can develop epizootics and kill large proportions of aphid populations. One of the major disadvantages of these fungi is their late time of infection during the season. When an epizootic has developed the damage to the crop may already been done by the aphids. There are several possible reasons to this; one of them being that the fungi requires high humidity to sporulate, but also for the germination of its conidia.
There are commercial entomopathogenic products available for biological control of aphids. These are based on species from the order Hypocreales which consist of generalist fungi that target several different orders of insect species. The advantage of using fungi from the order Entomophthorales would be that they are very specific and target only one type on insect. This minimizes the risk of killing insects that are beneficial to the crop such as natural enemies and pollinators.

Different methods can be used to enhance the living environment of entomopathogenic fungi. Field margins and weeds are good examples of alternative environments where the fungi can survive during periods when aphids are not present in the crop.

A lot of different species within the order Entomophthorales have been studied, some more than others. One of the goals with the upcoming EU directive on sustainable use of pesticides is the minimized usage of pesticides. This is an opportunity for a commercial product to be developed if the order of Entomophthorales is studied more intensively. There is large potential for the fungi to be used in biological control but it will require that a cost effective product is developed that is attractive not only to organic farmers.
