Abstract

,

Garvaregården is, for this particular area in the middle of Sweden, a traditional house built in 1810 and there is a desire to restore the garden in historic original style. There is no documentation on the present garden that for the most part is located on the housing east side. A hedge of lilac, some old trees of apple and currant bushes are some of the plants that are there today. With the help of a number of different analyses, as recommended in this education when it comes to a project site, I have made an inventory of the grounds and a list of present plants by identification. In the course of the work I have therefore complied with what is happening on the site. For example, patterns of movement, winds, light and shadow, wind, etc.
How is a restoration made possible in a garden where there is no past documentation and what it is that makes these particular gardens unique? The gardens of Bergslagen in
this time period are yet an un-researched area despite the fact that there are many farms where the buildings are preserved. Unfortunately, it is so that the gardens only show few traces of its former glory. In order to understand where we are going we must know where we come from. And there is a value in a place as this Bergsmangård for it to live on and have a function in the present but at the same time be a link to the past. It is also valuable for the region to preserve something so unique, identity-building and also the exotic landscape, in order to attract tourists, the new inhabitants and the old inhabitants to stay. There is therefore an interest to complete these farms with an authentic garden.

In this paper the question of how to restore an old garden without documentation is made possible through studies and choices of plants that can create a garden that feels
authentic to the time period.
