Abstract

Att språket bidrar till att forma vår omvärld är en utgångspunkt inom diskursanalysen. Utifrån det synsättet kan slutsatsen dras: att hur vi talar om det offentliga rummet formar också dess fysiska gestaltning. Målet för denna uppsats har varit att studera de termer och begrepp som beskriver och konstruerar det offentliga rummet. Vilka är de termer och begrepp som används för att beskriva det offentliga rummet? Hur påverkar de planeringen och utformningen? Dessa frågor har undersökts i syfte att problematisera kring begreppsanvändningen i den nutida svenska stadsplaneringen. Fokus har riktats mot användningen av metaforer, såsom mötesplats och stadens vardagsrum, för att beskriva det offentliga rummet. För att kartlägga begreppsanvändningen har en aktuell
översiktsplan studerats och analyserats. Som underlag till den genomförda analysen ligger en litteraturstudie som redovisar ett kritiskt resonemang som förts kring
begreppen mötesplats och stadens vardagsrum samt kring den svenska planeringsdiskursen i stort. Både mötesplatsen och stadens vardagsrum är begrepp som kan kopplas till en strävan efter att skapa trivsel och gemenskap i de offentliga rummen.

Problemet med denna strävan är att utrymme inte lämnas åt de grundläggande olikheter som finns i ett modernt demokratiskt samhälle. Liknade invändningar finns mot en
idealisering av den traditionella staden och dess offentliga rum. I det studerade plandokumentet finns det dels en begreppsanvändning som kan kopplas till teman som
problematiseras i litteraturstudien, dels det som tyder på en medvetenhet om delar av problematiken. Slutligen konstateras det att diskussionen kring de begrepp som formar
det offentliga rummen är viktig att föra inom landskapsarkitekturen och planeringen.

Language shapes our reality and the aim of this paper is to study the concepts that describe and shape the public space. What concepts and terms are applied to describe
public space? How do they affect planning and design? These issues have been studied whit the purpose of problematizing the conceptual use in the present Swedish urban
planning. The use of metaphors, such as ”the meeting place” and ”the city’s living room” as to describe the public space has been the main focus. In order to map the
current conceptual use, the master plan of Malmö has been studied and analysed. This was supported by a study of relevant literature that brings out a critical discussion of
the concepts of “the meeting place” and “the city’s living room” as well as the Swedish planning discourse at large. Both “the meeting place” and “the city’s living room” are metaphors that are supported by the desire to attain congeniality and community in the public space. A problem with this aspiration is that in such a space there is no room left for the fundamental differences that are the reality of the modern democracy. A similar objection has been made on the idealization of the traditional European city and its public space. In the master plan the conceptual use can both be linked to the issues raised by the literature but it also indicates an awareness of parts of this problematization. The final discussion concludes that a discussion concerning how the use of different concepts shape the public space is important to carry out in landscape architecture and planning.
