Abstract

Boskapspesten (eng.

On the 25th of May, 2011, rinderpest was confirmed to be eradicated from the earth. That makes it the second infectious disease that have been eradicated due to human efforts. The disease is one of the oldest listed livestock diseases and throughout history it has caused millions of deaths in cattle and small ruminants.

The rinderpest virus is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative RNA virus, belonging to the genus Morbillivirus from the family Paramyxoviridae. The disease that it caused was highly contagious, with a mortality rate of up to 90% in some cases. There was only one serotype of the virus, which simplified the development of vaccines. This factor, along with the fact that the virus had no asymptomatic carriers who can pass it on, made it possible to fight it
effectively.

From the early "stamping out" method, which involved killing all the sick animals in an area to prevent the spread of infection, the disease now could be controlled with more effective and well planned methods. During the 20th century, a number of campaigns to combat rinderpest were conducted around the world. Large cross-border collaboration between countries and organizations made it possible to effectively combat the virus worldwide.

Cattle plague is now gone, thanks to long and hard work. The gains are great on many levels; for small farmers to national economic achievements. The knowledge that has been gathered would also be useful for future projects of a similar type.
