Abstract

In recent years the diaspidid insect oystershell scale Lepidosaphes ulmi, has increased as a pest insect in Swedish apple orchards. Hence the growers acquire more updated information and facts about the scale. This bachelor thesis was written for that cause.

As the scale wears a hard scale cover throughout most of its life cycle – even the eggs are laid under the cover – it is difficult to regulate. Only the newly born nymphs lack cover.

According to a British study on using predictive models, the nymphs' encloses after 3595 degree hours cooperative with a base temperature at 8.7°C. Predictive models based on sums of temperature are comprehensive and makes it easier for the growers in their pest control.

The oystershell scale is common worldwide in a variety of places. Nevertheless the information about the life cycle and natural enemies of the oystershell scale in Swedish and
northern climate is scarce. Additional research has to be done about the scales lifecycle and their natural enemies in Sweden. Which natural enemies exist in Sweden is still uncertain, but the common earwig Forficula auricularia could be an important predator of the oystershell
scale.
