Abstract

Hur kan urban odling skapa nya sociala nätverk mellan människor och få dem att mötas i staden?
Litteraturstudien har till syfte att undersöka vilka studier som gjorts kring urban odling och socialt
kapital, med fokus på överbryggande socialt kapital. Begrepp som community garden, community,
kolonilott samt socialt kapital förklaras inledningsvis för att skapa ett ramverk till litteraturstudien.
Socialt kapital kan förklaras som nätverk och sociala kopplingar mellan människor, och överbryggande
socialt kapital är då sådana nätverk mellan människor från olika grupper i samhället. En historisk återblick ges kring hur socialt kapital, med fokus på överbryggande socialt kapital, har skapats både i Sverige genom kolonirörelsen och i USA genom olika stadsodlingsprogram från slutet av 1800-talet och fram till idag. Därefter refereras ett antal studier som undersökt kopplingar mellan socialt kapital och
kollektiv odling, samt ett antal studier som beskriver kollektiv och urban odling kopplat till nätverk och
möten, utan att använda begreppet socialt kapital. En diskussion kring resultatet i litteraturstudien ges
slutligen. Sammanfattningsvis visar litteraturstudien att överbryggande socialt kapital i flera fall har skapats genom urban odling.

How can urban gardening create new social networks between people and bring them together in the community? The purpose of this literature study is to examine which studies there is to be found about urban gardening and social capital, with focus on bridging social capital. Community garden, community, allotment plot and social capital are concepts which will be explained and create a
framework for this literature study. Social capital can be explained as networks and social connections between people, and bridging social capital is then the connections between people from different groups in the community. A historic recap is given to show how social capital, with focus on bridging social capital, have been generated both in Sweden though the allotment movement and in USA
through the different garden programs from the end of the 19th century until today. Afterwards a number of studies are commentated, both those which have examined the connections between community gardening and social capital, and those which have studied community gardens and
collective gardening and their networks, without using the concept of social capital. Finally, a discussion about the result of this literature study will be given. In conclusion this literature study shows that bridging social capital in many cases have been generated through urban gardening.
