Abstract

Eslöv received its city privileges in the year 1911 and to celebrate the city’s 100th jubilee it has been decided, among many other things, to reinvigorate the City park. This master thesis presents a new proposal for the design of the City park. As a basis for the new proposal a study of the public park is made in a social and structural context as well as a study of the history of the Eslöv City park. The history of the Eslöv City park is somewhat unclear, especially if there has ever been a one design for the whole park?
To create a picture of the public park in general, a study of literature has been made and to describe the history of the City park I Have researched the city archive in Eslöv. To get an insight in needs and requirements of a public park today I have made informal interviews of park visitors as well as some analysis of the park. The history of Eslöv city is an important part of the City park history and therefore part of this work. The three parts of this master thesis describes the public park as a part of a larger society structure, the history of Eslöv and its City Park and the third part is a presentation of a new design for the City park.
The first part is about the public park as a phenomenon, a phenomenon that is very strongly linked to the arrival of the industrialism and the fast rise and growth of cities. The park is a product of its city’s environment in the past as well as in the present.
The second part describes the growth of Eslöv city and the history of the City park. Eslöv rises as a Klondike of Scania with entrepreneurs and quickly growing industries. The future of Eslöv is more uncertain, what does Eslöv has to offer it’s citizens when people no longer work but only live in Eslöv?
The third part presents a new proposal for the design of the City park. The design should unify the different parts of the park to a whole, open up views through the park as well as give space for privacy and peaceful contemplation. The new park should complement the different types of park that already exist in Eslöv by offering a more city like park that makes better use of it’s very privileged position in Eslöv.
An important part of this work is the insight of how completely integrated the public park in general is in the social, economic and structural changes in Sweden in the last 100-150 years.
