Abstract

Koccidier (Eimeria spp) är encelliga parasiter som kan angripa antingen tarmkanalen eller lever och gallgångar hos tamkaniner. Sjukdomar i digestionskanalen är ofta komplexa och utgör ett stort problem hos kaniner världen över. Faktorer som påverkar sjukdomsförekomst och förlopp är således av intresse att belysa. Denna litteraturstudie överblickar parasitens livscykel, patogenes och faktorer som påverkar sjukdomsbilden. Eimeria spp är vanligt förekommande bland kaniner och orsakar framförallt sjukdom runt avvänjning. Under parasitens livscykel skadas framförallt epitelceller i tarmen eller celler i lever och gallgångarna. Symptomen kan variera från en något minskad tillväxt till allvarlig diarré och dödsfall. Subkliniska infektioner förekommer också. Sjukdomens allvarlighetsgrad är till stor del beroende av omständigheter som art av parasit, ålder på värddjuret, tidigare infektioner, infektionsdos samt förekomst av andra patogener. 1

Coccidia (Eimeria spp) are single-celled parasites that can infect either the intestinal tract or the liver and bile ducts of domestic rabbits. Diseases in the digestive system constitute a major problem in rabbits worldwide and factors involved are often complex. This study provides an overview of the life cycle of the parasites, the pathogenesis of rabbit coccidiosis and parameters that can influence the course of the disease. Eimeria spp are common and particularly affects young rabbits around the time of weaning. During its life cycle the parasites damage epithelial cells in the intestine, or hepatocytes and epithelial cells in the bile ducts. Symptoms can vary from a slightly reduced weight gain to severe diarrhoea and death. Subclinical infections also occur. The severity of the disease largely depends on factors such as species of parasite, infection dose, age of the host animal, previous infections and the presence of other pathogens.
