Abstract

Det här är en studie i hur vi kan utveckla de små, urbana platserna i det offentliga rummet för att göra dem mer användbara.

Jag har studerat fyra små, centralt belägna, offentliga platser i Malmö. Två av platserna har hög grad av aktivitet, medan endast en låg grad av aktivitet förekommer på de andra två. Jag har gjort analyser av platsernas relation till den omgivande stadsstrukturen, av platsernas rumslighet, av vilken aktivitet som förekommer på platserna, av hur offentliga platserna egentligen är och möjligheten för appropriation på platserna. Med utgångspunkt i resultaten av analyserna har jag gjort nya gestaltningsförslag för platserna med låg grad av aktivitet.

Med de nya gestaltningarna försöker jag ge exmpel på hur de små, urbana, offentliga platserna kan göras mer användbara.

Platserna ska kunna användas till nödvändig aktivitet såväl som för valbar och social aktivitet. Det ska gå att stanna till utmed platsernas kanter, som också ska bjuda in till resten av rummet. Platserna ska erbjuda områden för både interaktion och reträtt. De ska dessutom på något sätt vara möjliga för användaren att appropriera. En öppenhet inför olika typer av aktiviteter är viktig, liksom att platserna fungerar för människor i olika åldrar och situationer.

Mina lösningar på dessa motsägelsefulla krav, är enkla strama grundstrukturer med flexibelt innehåll. Funktionella platser med möjlighet till vistelse och med detaljer i förändring.

This is a study of how we can develop the small, urban, public places, to make them more useful.

I have been studying four small, central, public places in Malmö. Two of the places are frequently used, while the other two host very little activity. I have done analyses of the places in relation to the surrounding city structure, of the spatial quality, of the existing activity, on how public the places really are and the possibility for the user to take the places into appropriation. With starting point in the results of the analyses, suggestions of new forms are given, for the places with little activity.

The new forms try to exemplify how the small, urban, public places can be made more useful.

The places are to be used for functional activity as well as for recreative and social activity. The edges of the places shall allow the user to stop by, and shall invite the user to the remaining room. The places are to provide areas for both interaction and for recover. The places shall also be possible for the user to affect in some way. Openness to different types of activity is important, as well as the places being functional for people in different ages and situations.

My solution to these contradictory demands, are simple underlying structures with a flexible content. Functional places with possibilities for spending time at and with details in change.
