Abstract

Ever since the oil crisis in the 1970´s various methods to increase the forest fuel harvest for energy production have come and gone. Due to the global warming and the increasing oil price the interest of forest fuel for carbon neutral and renewable energy production has again increased in Sweden. The Swedish government has stated the goal that 50 % of the energy supplies by the year 2020 should come from renewable sources. District heating (DH) and combined heat and power (CHP) is mentioned as a possible way to reach the goal. There is however a variation of the availability of forest fuel and the need for forest fuel for heat and electricity production across the country. The object of this study was to use Heureka applications to calculate the forest fuel potential in Sweden under different assumptions about the forest management. The country was divided into five regions and simulations of two forest management scenarios were performed. In the simulations the forest fuel potential over the next 100 years was calculated. The calculations were based on data from the national forest inventory (NFI). The results suggest that simple changes in the forest management can increase, and in some cases double, the forest fuel harvest. There is an untapped potential of forest fuel in Sweden, an asset that could be of use to reach the goal on renewable energy supply mentioned by the government.
