Abstract

Riksskogstaxeringens GPS-utrustnig (Geoexplorer II) i två dimensioner.

This thesis was done at the Department of Forest Resources and Geomatics, SLU, Umeå
during the fall 1996 and the spring 1997. The purpose of the stud
y was to investigate how
PDOP values influences position accuracy, precision and time spent measuring positions
under a Norway spruce canopy. The Swedish National Forest Inventory GPS equipment
(Geoexplorer II) was used.
The study area is situated near Umeå (lat. 63° 49' 34"N, long. 20° 1 8' 47"E) and is
characterised by a fairly flat landscape. The test site is located at the end of a gentie slope
approxirnately 200 meters from the crest and it is within a rnature spruce forest Successful
measurernents took place during ten hours daytime, 8 AM to 4 PM for two days, 27 th of
February and 15 th of March. The true coordinate of the test si
te centre is known and during
one hour each day six additional receivers were placedin a 400m2 quadrant facing north, to
gather position data. The weather conditions during the trials were good both days with a clear
sky and no wind.
Both day s show similar results and for PDOP l O as limit for positions used in calculations, a
standard deviation of approximately 5 meters for the average of 40 positions was obtained.
For PDOP 6 as lirnit for positions used in calculations, a standard deviation of approximately
4 meters for the average of 40 positions was obtained. PDOP-mask 6 is also the standard
setting used by the Swedish National Forest Inventory. The differences between using PDOP
lO and 6 as limit for positions used in calculations are small due to the fact that most of the
positions during both days had low PDOP values.
Time spent for gathering 40 positions which is the recommended number of positions to
obtain an accurate averaged position used as a standard routine by The Swedish National
Forest Inventory, was for PDOP lO and 6 as lirnit for positions used in calculations
approxirnately six and ten minntes respectively. The results showed that forthese conditions
during these two days the accuracy of positions could be approximated to the standard
deviation for averaged and single positions. A sample of 60 averaged positions was fairly
evenly spread around the true position although with a slight concentration towards south
east.
Generally the standard deviation of positions decreased as the number of positions used for
averaging increased and as the limit for PDOP decreased. Furthermore the time spent for
gathering positions increased as the limit for PDOP decreased and as the number of positions
gathered increased.
Obtained experiences from measurements also show that the equipment used sometimes may
perform in an unexpected way. During the study one of the receivers was discovered to not be
able to establish contact with satellites to the same extent as the other receivers. The cause for
the degradation in performance for this particular receiver is not known.
