Abstract

IN s ungskogsinventering och
Riksskogstaxeringens permanenta provytor inom de undersökta länen. Totalt resulterade
datorsimuleringen i 144 produktionstabeller.
Riks
skogstaxeringen.

The Swedish National Forest Inventory (the Swedish NFI) has produced most of the forest
statistics in Sweden since 1923. The main objective is to provide information about the state
and changes of Swedish forests. Traditionall
y, the focus has been on the yield of timber but
now biodiversity is of equal dignity. Several productian functions have been developed and
evaluated during the years. The present estimator of production, "the productian level", was
introduced in the Swedish NFI in 1983. The productian level is expressedas an index based
on howgoodthe timber productian capacity of the si
te is utilised campared to the natural
highest possible productian ability.
The Swedish NFI will be revised until2003 when the 8th version begins. The development
and improvement is performed asanongoing project, RT-2000. The present study is sub
project to RT-2000 with the main objective to develop and validate a new growth measure.
This new measure, "the production-density", (Ps), [%] is defined as
Ps = current growth x 100
reference growth
Where the current growth is the growth of today and the reference growth is a predetermined
reference growth. The "optimal" reference growth for coniferous (mainly Pinus sylvestris or
Picea abies) and mixed coniferous forests (mainly Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies) was
developed by a simulation model. The result of this simulation was 144 yield tables for the
counties of Jönköping and Kronoberg. The data used was obtained from "the young stands of
HUGIN" (Elfving, 1982) and from permanent plots (years 1996-2000) in the Swedish NFI.
The productian density, Ps, was applied on 610 permanent plots. The Ps[%] was relatively
high in the counties and the mean Ps of years 1996-2000 was estimated to 75.7%. The results
from this study were campared three other Swedish growth measures and to "the better half
growth measure" (Bladh and Janz, 1974), a former growth measure of the Swedish NFI. The
results from this comparison showed a low reference growth for spruce. Another result was
that it was difficult to apply the reference growth on mixed coniferous forests. This might
have had an influence on the calculations of the Ps.
The study shows that the productian density can be a useful tool for the Swedish NFI. The
main conclusion is that more research is needed before the measure can be fully applied in
practice.
