Abstract

At a seminar in Alnarp results concerning pheromones and their influence on insect behaviour were presented. Both of us thought the topic was very fascinating, especially that the system actually works as it does.
Our interest in the matter grew, and we started to wonder if it could be a possible topic for a project (examensarbete). We contacted Ylva Hillbur, assistant professor at the Division of Chemical Ecology, and she became our supervisor. The project was a collaboration with Växtskyddscentralen in Linköping and Hushållningssällskapet in Kristianstad. The overall objective of the study was to investigate the possibility of using pheromone traps as a method to establish a threshold value for treatment with insecticides against orange wheat blossom midge. The method currently used for prognosis is a threshold value that involves visual estimation of number of midges per spike. Since the midges are small (1-2 mm) and highly mobile, the method is difficult to use and growers therefore tend to spray ‘just in case’. A user-friendly and accurate monitoring system would allow for growers to safely refrain from spraying when there is no need for it and the amount of insecticides used in wheat production could thus be limited.

The aim of this project was to investigate if there is a correlation between the number of male orange wheat blossom midges that are caught in pheromone traps and the subsequent crop damaged caused by the larvae. The effect of trap placement – if the traps were placed in the middle or at the edge of the field – and dispenser type (the container/material that emits the pheromone) was also tested. We tested two different dispensers: cotton rolls and polyethylene caps (PE). Both dispenser types were impregnated with 100μg of the pheromone. The cotton dispensers were replaced with fresh ones, once during the experimental period. A couple of weeks after ear-setting, wheat spikes were collected and the number of attacked seeds were counted.

There were no significant differences in catches between traps placed in the centre or at the edges of the field. Furthermore, the dispenser type did not have any significant impact on the trap catches. However, catches seemed to correlate with the damage leveles. More midges were caught in Skåne and damages were also larger there. Still, damages were overall low, at the most 0,48 %, and can be considered as economically insignificant.

Although the population density was lower in Östergötland than in Skåne, the emergence of adults started earlier. A reason for this may be that the fields in Östergötland are organically grown, with more weed in the field. This may increase the moisture in the field and enhance the emergence. In Östergötland, there was also a second peak in the emergence possibly induced by a heavy rain.

Further experiments are needed before the pheromone traps can be used for monitoring. An important questions that needs to be answered is e.g. how many traps are needed in a field to be able to get a good correlation between trap catches and crop damage? It would be interesting to do these experiments and to see if it’s possible to establish a threshold value for use of insecticides.
