Abstract

I dagsläget saknas det information om förekomst av stereotypier hos lodjur (Lynx lynx) i svenska djurparker. För att djuren i parkerna ska få förutsättningar som möter deras behov måste vi veta om det finns ett problem i dagsläget som behöver åtgärdas. Detta arbete är ett första steg till att få en överblick över förekomsten av stereotypier hos lodjur i svenska djurparker. Studien syftar även till att bistå Skånes Djurpark med information om hur parkens lodjur utnyttjar sitt hägn.

Studien består av två delar, varav den ena utfördes i form av en beteendestudie på Skånes Djurpark i Höör, där tre beteendekategorier (aktiva, passiva och stereotypier) samt hägnutnyttjande registrerades med hjälp av kontinuerlig fokaldjursobservation och momentanregistrering med ett intervall på en minut. Den andra delen består av en enkätstudie som skickats till 10 djurparker i Sverige som håller lodjur.

Beteendestudien i Skånes Djurpark visar att tre av fyra individer utför stereotypin pacing. Hanen ser ut att vara den individ som utför pacing mest. De flesta pacingsekvenserna utfördes under förmiddagens observationspass, både före och efter matning. Honan utförde inte någon form av stereotypi utan spenderade större delen av observationerna passiv, detta kan dock bero på att hon var dräktig. Hägnet i Skånes Djurpark ser ut att utnyttjas ojämnt, med störst andel registreringar i zon A (40 %) och B (42 %) och endast 18 % i zon C.

Enkätundersökningen visade också att pacing verkar vara vanligt förekommande med tre av fem svarande parker som uppgav att de upplevde att en eller flera lodjursindivider uppvisade pacing. En av parkerna som uppgav att de inte upplevde att någon individ utförde någon form av stereotypi är Skånes Djurpark som beteendestudien utfördes på. Detta kan bland annat visa på att det kan vara svårt för djurparkspersonalen att veta exakt hur djuren beter sig, men också på att definitionen av stereotypier skiljer sig åt. Därför skulle det vara av vikt att utföra beteendestudier under längre tid på fler parker för på ett tillförlitligare sätt sammanställa information om förekomst av stereotypier hos lodjur i svenska djurparker.

På grund av korta tid studien utfördes och de få individer som observerades samt de få djurparker som svarade på enkäten är frågeställningarna inte kan besvaras på ett säkert sätt. Frågorna som ställts i denna studie kan med fördel användas i mer omfattande studier i framtiden. Mer forskning inom området är av vikt. Eftersom lodjur är relativt vanliga både på djurparker och i det vilda skulle arten vara lämplig för vidare studier för att försöka förstå varför kattdjur i fångenskap verkar drabbade av stereotypier och vad som kan göras för att minska dess förekomst.

In the present there is no information on the occurrence of stereotypies in the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Swedish zoos. To assure that the animals needs and wellbeing are being met we have to find out if there is an existing problem that needs to be adjusted. This paper’s aim is to make a first step to overlook the prevalence of stereotypies in lynx in Swedish zoos. The second aim of the study is to assist Skånes Djurpark with information on how the lynx in their park utilize their enclosure.

The study consists of two parts, one is performed as a behavior study at Skånes Djupark in Höör, where three behavioural categories (active, passive and stereotypies) and utilization of the enclosure was recorded. The methods used were continuous recording with focalsampling and instantaneous sampling with an interval of one minute. The second part of the study consists of a survey which was sent to 10 zoos in Sweden keeping lynx.

The behavioural study at Skånes Djurpark indicates that three out of four individuals performs the stereotypi pacing. Most pacing bouts were performed during the observations before noon. The male performed pacing most of the individuals the female however didn’t perform any stereotypies at all, she spent most of the time passive, this may be due to the fact that she was pregnant. Enclosure utilization at Skånes Djurpark seems to be uneven, with most of the recordings registered in zone A (40 %) and B (42 %) only 18 % of the recordings were in zone C.

The survey showed that pacing seems to be the stereotypie most seen with three out of five parks answering that one or more of their individuals performed pacing. One of the two zoos claiming not to have any problems with any stereotypies was Skånes Djurpark where the behavioural study was executed. This could indicate that it is difficult for zookeepers to know how the animals behave and how to define different behaviour categories. Because of this it is important to execute behavioural studies over a longer period of time and at more zoos in purpose to get reliable data to build conclusions on.

The short period of time this study was conducted, the few individuals observed and the few answering zoos leads to the conclusion that the questions in the study can’t be satisfyingly answered. The questions in this study could be used as they are in bigger studies in the future. More research on the area is needed. Since lynx are relatively common both in zoos and in the wild, the species could be suitable for further studies in order to eventually understand why felids in captivity seem prone to perform stereotypies, and what can be done to reduce their occurrence.
