Abstract

Anthelmintic resistance in cattle is a recently discovered problem. This literary survey shows that it is a global issue that is likely to occur in even more countries than the ones investigated so far. In the resistance studies Cooperia spp. are the most frequently reported parasites, followed by Ostertagia ostertagi. Resistance to macrocyclic lactones dominates but in some cases the parasites also indicate resistance to benzimidazoles. The fact that anthelmintic resistance is only recently reported in cattle is probably due to the fact that the resistant species normally have a low pathogenicity which has hidden the problems in the animals. At the same time the measured data has been insecure because of the measurement methods that are not developed for use specifically in cattle. To investigate the currency of anthelmintic resistance more exactly in cattle there is a need for development of more specific and standardized testing methods. To avoid a further increase in anthelmintic resistance the use of anthelmintics on the farms needs to be more limited and not as a preventive action. In that way a lesser proportion of the parasites will be exposed to anthelmintics and therefore less likely to select for resistant genes to be transferred to the next generation. As a complement but not yet a replacement there are some measures as for example pasture rotation that has proved to be successful in keeping the economic losses down despite a reduced use of anthelmintics. To give the problem more focus and increase the interest of research in the field information of what anthelmintic resistance means and how it can be avoided needs to reach the farmers and advisors.
