Abstract

Over the course of a few decades, our view of the domestic cat has changed considerably. The cat has emerged as a companion animal beyond being a mere controller of the pest
population. This change in attitude has led to a substantial alteration in the keeping of cats in regards to where they spend the most part of their lives. Cats were mainly kept outdoors but,as of lately, most cats are kept mainly indoors during the entire course of their lives. The
consequences that these changes implicate are yet to be fully understood. The founding hypothesis of this literature study was that the reported behavior problems seen in the cat population of today is partly or mainly the result of environmental impoverishment and the subsequent stress that this puts on the individual. The purpose of this study was therefore to describe the most common behavioral problems in cats, and the cause, effect and treatment thereof. The conclusions from this literature study is that cats have a definite time limitation to when they can learn intra- and interspecies specific communication and that if not appropriately socialized during this critical period, may not be able to interact with others and will experience an onset of a stress response if accommodated with another individual. Cats
will experience a higher degree of stress if they are not able to hide from or avoid the stressors. Cats able to control their environment will also have lower scores on the cat stress score and lower blood concentration of cortisol. Behavior problems reported in cats are typically normal behaviors for the cat which can, however, create irritation and or harm to people or property. The most frequently reported behavior problems in cats are inappropriate elimination and mistargeted aggressiveness. Measures to avoid and eliminate these problems are to redirect them to a more appropriate behavior. By decreasing the level of stress experienced by the cat through provision of environmental enrichment and opportunities of
autonomy, most behavior problems can be avoided.
