Abstract
I övrigt förekom inga signifikanta skillnader.
Reindeer herding is of great cultural and economic importance in Sápmi, a geographical area that covers the north of Scandinavia and parts of Russia. In Sweden, the reindeer is semi domesticated whilst in Finland, Norway and Russia, there are wild reindeer species as well as semi domesticated herds. Alphaherpesvirus belongs to the family Orthoherpesviridae and has been shown to cause
infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) as well as causing lesions in other mucous membranes. This affects the welfare of the animal as well as causing economic loss for the reindeer herders. Pestivirus belongs to the family Flaviviridae and causes reproductive losses in ruminants. The consequences for reindeer health are still not entirely known.
This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of alphaherpesvirus and pestivirus in reindeer in Sweden. A total of 310 blood samples were collected from reindeer belonging to six different reindeer herding districts between 2020 and 2022. The samples were analyzed for alphaherpesvirusand pestivirus-specific antibodies to determine the seroprevalence in reindeer calves (<1 year) and adults (>1 year). The overall seroprevalence was 37.1% for alphaherpesvirus and 28.4% for pestivirus. A comparison was then made between regions to analyze possible geographical differences in seroprevalence. Further, the seroprevalence in individual herding districts were compared with findings from previous studies to evaluate changes over time.
In the comparison between regions, a significant higher seroprevalence of pestivirus was observed in Norrbotten county compared to Dalarna/Jämtland. Västerbotten county had a significantly higher seroprevalence of alphaherpesvirus than both Norrbotten and Dalarna/Jämtland. No other
significant differences were observed.
Furthermore, a comparison was made with a previous study that analyzed serum samples from a specific reindeer herding district for pestivirus antibodies between 1996 to 2016. This comparison indicated a break in the previously declining trend in seroprevalence in reindeer in the district.
