Abstract

Bovine Spastic Syndrome (BOSS) is a chronic, progressive neuromuscular disorder that affects adult cattle. The disorder causes intermittent episodes of painful cramps in the hindlimbs that impair movement. Little is known about its presence in Sweden. This study aimed to explore the occurrence of clinical signs compatible with BOSS in Swedish cattle herds and to identify herd-level factors associated with farmer-reported cases. An online survey aimed at Swedish cattle owners was conducted between June and September 2025, yielding 201 responses from all 21 counties and a range of production systems.
Approximately one-third of respondents reported having observed animals over three years of age showing clinical signs consistent with BOSS. Reports were geographically widespread but varied by county. Observations were substantially more common in dairy herds: 60% of dairy respon-dents had observed signs, and dairy producers accounted for 80% of all positive reports. In contrast, only 6% of beef producers reported observing signs.
Although the study relied on self-reported observations and cannot confirm clinical diagnoses, the results indicate that clinical signs compatible with BOSS are present in many parts of Sweden and may be more frequently recognized in dairy systems. These findings highlight the need for improved diagnostic awareness, targeted epidemiological surveillance, and further investigation into risk factors and potential genetic components of the syndrome.
