Abstract
,Beach-cast seaweed is a potential nutrient source in agriculture. However, it sometimes contains high levels of cadmium (Cd) relative to its nutrient content, raising questions about its suitability for agricultural use. The aim of this study was to determine how Cd is bound in beach-cast seaweed and to assess its potential as a nutrient source. Nine samples from Öland and Gotland were analysed using sequential extraction to fractionate Cd into acid-soluble, reducible and oxidisable fractions. A fourth step was also carried out to determine the pseudo-total content through aqua regia extraction. The majority (69–89 %) of Cd bound in beach cast seaweed was extracted in the reducible fraction. This suggests that Cd is most readily mobilised under acidic conditions and that it is bound to the surface of the seaweed. When beach cast seaweed is applied to agricultural land, Cd is thus expected to become plant available over time, with the rate depending on chemical conditions such as pH. Cd inputs following seaweed application were estimated high relative to the amount of nutrients supplied. Beach cast seaweed may still serve as a supplementary fertiliser when the recycling of nitrogen and phosphorus or an increase in soil organic matter is prioritised.
