Abstract
Pre-harvest clearing is an efficient tool to increase productivity in final harvests in tree stands with dense understory vegetation. As of today however, deeming pre-harvest clearing needs is done manually through forestry professionals field-visiting tracts, and performing an intricate process of assessing whether or not the tract would benefit from being cleared before harvest. This is seen as a very time-consuming process, which is also prone to subjective assessments.
This project explores the potential of digitalizing this process using a non-linear machine learning approach in GIS. The machine learning method is based on Breiman’s (2001) Random forest classification model using raster data derived from LiDAR and other stand-growth-related factors as defined by Albrektson et al. (2012).
This thesis is written on a commission from Holmen Forest. Thus, the classification labels in the data used to train the model are based on real-world pre-harvest clearing decisions made by forestry professionals at Holmen Forest.
The model achieved an overall Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.59 and 0.81 accuracy. The model also showed that elevation, the topographic wetness index, slope and LiDAR-based vegetation point clouds between seven to nine meters were the most important factors in the used dataset.
The analysis identified signs of overfitting in the model and certain sources of error in the LiDAR data. However, the model predicted three out of four tracts correctly when tested on unseen data in a more practical setting. This method therefore shows promise as a digital tool for assessing pre-harvest clearing with further development and increased training data.
