Abstract
,Urbanisation poses significant challenges for cities worldwide and densification is frequently highlighted as a key strategy for sustainable urban development. The aim of this paper is to examine different densification strategies and their impact on urban green structures, as well as to analyse how these strategies are described and applied in municipal planning. Two research questions guide the study: what types of densification strategies exist within urban development and what ecological consequences are associated with them, and how are different densification strategies referenced and applied in the urban development projects of Lund municipality. Through a combined literature review and case study approach, two densification projects in Lund are analysed: the infill development of Sankt Mikael 16 and the larger urban transformation of the former industrial area Västerbro. The findings show that densification is a complex concept that in municipal planning is frequently used without distinguishing between different strategy types, despite the fact that these carry different ecological and social consequences. Green infrastructure emerges as particularly vulnerable in densification processes, even in cases where ecological goals are explicitly stated in planning documents. The conclusion is that sustainable densification requires greater clarity regarding which strategy is employed, the context in which it is applied, and which values are prioritised throughout the process.
