Abstract
Cats have complex behavioral, environmental, and physiological needs, and adequate knowledge is important for ensuring good welfare and a positive cat-owner relationship. However, there is limited knowledge regarding what information is provided to prospective cat owners by shelters and rehoming organizations. The aim of this study was to examine the availability, content, and scientific alignment of information provided by Swedish cat shelters and rehoming organizations. Publicly available information from organizations’ websites (n = 104) and Facebook profiles (n = 21) was analyzed, together with additional written material (n = 34) provided by the organizations. Information was coded across predefined categories and assessed in terms of information depth, scientific alignment, and legal alignment. The results showed that information was unevenly distributed across categories, with a focus on medical and regulatory aspects, while behavioral and environmental needs were less frequently addressed and presented with lower depth. A significant association was found between information depth and scientific alignment, indicating that more detailed information was more likely to reflect current scientific knowledge. The use of source citations was limited, which may reduce transparency and make it more difficult for prospective cat owners to assess the reliability of the information provided. In conclusion, while the information provided generally meets basic expectations, current regulations do not specify what information should be communicated to prospective cat owners, and the information remains limited in scope and depth. Improving the depth, distribution, and transparency of information may support more comprehensive, consistent, and scientifically grounded guidance and improved welfare outcomes for cats.
