Abstract

Den entreprenöriella ekosystem-modellen förklarar hur samspel mellan aktörer kan skapa och stimulera ekonomisk tillväxt. Modellen är dock präglad av en urban karaktär med ett ensidigt fokus på ekonomisk tillväxt. Denna prägel osynliggör både sociala och kulturella värden samt rurala sammanhang, vilket resulterar i att dessa hamnar i skymundan inom både forskning och politik. I denna uppsats kritiseras den traditionella entreprenöriella ekosystem-modellen med syfte att bidra till förklaringen av rurala entreprenöriella ekosystem utifrån sociala och kulturella processer. Genom en konceptuell lins som lyfter fram sociala drivkrafter och interaktion med kontexter, skapas teoretiska verktyg för att förklara ekosystemprocesser i tillstånd av institutionell tunnhet och resursknapphet, med symboliska resurser i den lokala miljön och historien, där meningsskapande aktiviteter särskiljs från sådana som utmanar centralisering.
Genom en kvalitativ metod med induktiv ansats och socialkonstruktionistisk ontologi presenteras en fallstudie av Bruksorten, baserad på två observationer, två gruppsamtal, fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer samt en litteraturgenomgång. Utifrån en tematisk analys av empirin presenteras fältarbetet med hjälp av tre narrativ (Lasses Leder, Monicas Mylla och Vretarnas Varp) och fyra teman (Entreprenörskap för lokal hälsa, Platsberoende entreprenörskap, Entreprenörskap och inkludering samt Ambivalens kring institutionellt och finansiellt stöd).
Därefter diskuteras empirin i relation till uppsatsens konceptuella lins. Inledningsvis kring hur bruksortens entreprenöriella ekosystem utmanar traditionella modeller genom att prioritera sociala värden framför ekonomisk vinning, samt hur platsens kulturhistoria genererar symboliska resurser. Samtidigt belyses ekosystemets sårbarhet inför centralisering och ambivalens gentemot kommunen. Vidare diskuteras hur det rurala entreprenörskapet präglas av kollektiva, konkurrenslösa samarbeten som skapar lokala värden, samt vad som föder politiska narrativ och lokalt motstånd. Diskussionen sammanfattas i bruksortens rörelser mellan trygghet och oro, vilket ses som ett symptom på ett bristande system där rurala entreprenöriella ekosystem ständigt anpassar sig till komplexa utmaningar. Uppsatsen utmynnar i slutsatser om att forskningen behöver inkludera hur relationer, känslor och kulturhistoriska resurser används för att navigera i och förändra rurala entreprenöriella ekosystem. Slutligen poängteras hur icke-monetära drivkrafter i ideella engagemang samspelar med sociala vinster i institutionellt tunna kontexter, samt att stödjande funktioner bör främja samarbete och öppenhet över verksamhetsgränser. Uppsatsen avslutas med rekommendationer för framtida forskning.

The entrepreneurial ecosystem model explains how interactions between various actors can create and stimulate economic growth. But the model is characterized by an urban bias with a focus on economic growth. This bias renders both social and cultural values, as well as rural contexts, invisible, resulting in them being overshadowed in both research and policy. This thesis criticizes the traditional entrepreneurial ecosystem-model with the aim of contributing to the explanation of rural entrepreneurial ecosystems based on social and cultural processes. Through a conceptual lens that highlights social drivers and interaction with contexts, theoretical tools are created to explain ecosystem processes in states of institutional thinness and resource scarcity, utilizing symbolic resources in the local environment and history, where sensemaking activities are distinguished from those that challenge centralization.

Using a qualitative method with an inductive approach and a social constructionist ontology, a case study about the Mill town is presented based on two observations, two focus groups, four semi-structured interviews, and a literature review. Based on a thematic analysis of the empirical data, the fieldwork is presented through three narratives (Lasse's Trails, Monica's Soil, and the Vretarna Warp) and four themes (Entrepreneurship for local health, Place-dependent entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship and inclusion, and Ambivalence regarding institutional and financial support).

Subsequently, the empirical findings are discussed in relation to the thesis's conceptual lens. The discussion centers on how the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the Mill town challenges conventional models by prioritizing social values over economic gain, and how the cultural history and place narratives generates symbolic resources. Concurrently, the ecosystem's vulnerability to centralization and its ambivalence toward the municipality are highlighted. Furthermore, the discussion addresses how rural entrepreneurship is characterized by collective, non-competitive collaborations that generate local value, as well as fueling political narratives and local resistance. The discussion is summarized through the Mill town's movements between security and turmoil, which is viewed as a symptom of a deficient system where rural entrepreneurial ecosystems constantly adapt to complex challenges. The thesis culminates in the conclusion that research needs to include how relationships, emotions, and cultural-historical resources are utilized to navigate and transform rural entrepreneurial ecosystems. Finally, it is emphasized how non-monetary drivers in non-profit engagement interact with social gains in institutionally thin contexts, and that supporting functions should promote collaboration and openness across organizational boundaries. The thesis concludes with recommendations for future research.
