Abstract

Reptiler har blivit allt mer populära som husdjur i Sverige. Trots att många reptiler köps från djuraffärer är information som lämnas ut i samband med köp ofta bristfällig eller felaktig. Detta är mycket problematiskt eftersom flera studier har visat att reptilägare har bristande kunskap om sina reptiler. En orsak till detta kan ha varit att reptilägare har svårt att hitta information för artspecifik skötsel för sin reptil. Syftet med kandidatarbetet var därför att analysera informationen reptilägare fick från djuraffären vid inköp av reptiler och jämföra den med svensk lagstiftning.
För att undersöka detta utfördes en enkätstudie. Enkätens frågor baserades på Statens jordbruksverks föreskrifter och allmänna råd (SJVFS 2019:15) om villkor för hållande, uppfödning och försäljning m.m. av djur avsedda för sällskap och hobby, saknr L80. Resultaten från enkäten visade att majoriteten av respondenterna inte fått information om vilka minimimått som gäller för deras reptilart. Ungefär hälften av respondenterna fick information om lämpligt substrat, inredning, badvatten, temperaturgradienten och foder men kvaliteten på informationen var mycket varierande. Majoriteten av respondenterna hade antingen inte fått information om lämplig luftfuktighet och allmän temperatur eller så hade de fått information som inte stämde överens med reptilartens behov. En stor andel av respondenterna fick information om lämpliga värmekällor och majoriteten av dessa fick information som var samstämmig med föreskrifterna.
Enkätstudiens resultat visar att informationen från djuraffärer är både bristfällig i mängd och kvalitet i jämförelse med svensk lagstiftning. Studenterna skulle vilja se revideringar i L80. Ytterligare svenska studier är nödvändiga för att undersöka hur väl svensk lagstiftning följs.

Reptiles have increased in popularity as pets in Sweden. Even though many reptiles are bought from pet stores the information provided at the time of purchase is often inadequate or incorrect. This is very problematic since multiple studies have shown that knowledge about reptile husbandry is lacking among reptile owners. The reason for this might be that it can be difficult for reptile owners to find species-specific information about how to care for their reptile. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyse the information provided by pet stores to reptile owners at the time of purchase of a reptile and compare it with Swedish legislation.
To examine this a survey was conducted. The questions for the survey were based on The Swedish Board of Agriculture’s regulation Statens jordbruksverks föreskrifter och allmänna råd (SJVFS 2019:15) om villkor för hållande, uppfödning och försäljning m.m. av djur avsedda för sällskap och hobby, saknr L80. The results from the study showed that the majority of the respondents had not been given any information about the minimum dimensions required for their species of reptile. About half of the respondents received information about suitable substrate and furnishings, bathwater, temperature gradient and diet but the quality of the information varied greatly. The majority of the respondents had either not been given any information about appropriate humidity and general temperature or had received information that did not apply to the needs of the reptile species. A large proportion of the respondents received information about suitable heat sources and the majority of these received information that was consistent with the regulations.
The results from the survey show that the information from pet stores is lacking in both amount and quality compared to Swedish legislation. The students would like to see revisions in L80. Further studies conducted in Sweden are needed to investigate how the legislation is followed.
