Abstract

Parodontala sjukdomar är mycket vanligt förekommande hos hund och utgör en av de vanligaste sjukdomarna hos våra sällskapshundar. Trots detta är följsamheten till daglig tandborstning låg, studier visar att endast omkring 4 % av hundägare utför daglig tandborstning. Denna låga följsamhet till den så kallade ”gold standard”-metoden har bidragit till ett ökat intresse för alternativa och mer passiva metoder för att förbättra munhälsan såsom tandvårdsfoder, tillskott, tuggprodukter och ben.
Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka vilka foder och tandvårdsprodukter som användes av ägare till små hundar under 10 kg samt hur dessa produkter upplevs fungera i relation till vetenskaplig evidens.
Studien genomfördes som en enkätstudie riktad till småhundsägare med minst en hund under 10 kg. Totalt analyserades 269 fullständiga enkätsvar.
Resultaten visade att de vanligaste använda tandvårdsprodukterna var dentaltugg och i viss mån även tuggleksaker som marknadsförs för att förbättra munhälsan, dock tyckte inte ägarna att dessa produkter hade någon markant effekt på munhälsan. Algpulver och klorhexidingel var de namngivna produkterna som upplevdes ha bäst effekt trots varierat vetenskapligt stöd. Studien visade också att 17% borstade tänderna på sina hundar nästintill dagligen vilket är långt över vad som har setts i vissa tidigare studier.
Slutsatsen är att småhundsägare använder en del kommersiella tandvårdsprodukter och att upplevd effekt inte alltid överensstämmer med vetenskaplig evidens. Studien belyser behovet av fortsatt forskning samt vikten av evidensbaserad rådgivning inom veterinärmedicin.

Periodontal disease is very common in dogs and represents one of the most common diseases affecting our pets. Despite this, compliance with daily tooth brushing remains low with studies showing that only around 4% of dog owners maintain daily tooth brushing. This low compliance to the so-called “gold standard” method has contributed to an increased interest in alternative and more passive methods to improve oral health such as dental diets, supplements, chew products and bones.
The aim of this study was to investigate which dental care products are used by owners of small dogs less than 10 kg and how these products are perceived in relation to scientific evidence.
The study was conducted as a questionnaire-based survey targeting owners of small dogs with at least one dog under 10 kg. A total of 269 responses were analysed.
The results showed that the most used dental care products were dentalsticks and to some extent chew toys marketed for oral health improvement. However, owners generally did not perceive these products to have a notable effect on oral health. Algalpowder and chlorhexidine gel were the named products reported to have the best perceived effect, despite mixed scientific evidence supporting some of these products. The study also showed that 17% of respondents brushed their dogs teeth’s almost daily, which is considerably higher than reported in some previous studies.
The conclusion is that owners of small dogs use dental care products to some extent and that perceived effectiveness does not always correspond to scientific evidence. The study highlights the need for further research and the importance of evidence-based recommendations in veterinary medicine.
