Abstract

Hälta hos kor är ett vanligt problem som innebär negativa konsekvenser för ekonomi och djurvälfärd. Detta examensarbete bestod av en enkätstudie vars syfte var att med hjälp av en videoenkät undersöka svenska nötkreaturbönders förmåga att bedöma hälta hos mjölkkor, att bilda en uppfattning om vid vilken grad av rörelsestörning svenska bönder anser en ko vara halt, hur de hanterar olika grader av hälta, när de anser att kor med olika hältgrader bör undersökas samt hur svaren skiljer sig mellan olika grad av erfarenhet hos enkätdeltagarna.
Enkäten bestod av sju bakgrundsfrågor följt av 15 hältfall med tillhörande videofilm. Totalt besvarades enkäten av 71 personer, varav 40 inkluderades i resultatet. Enkätsvaren sammanställdes och analyserades med deskriptiv statistik och ett Wilcoxons signed rank test genomfördes. Resultatet visade på att populationen i denna studie hade en god förmåga att bedöma hälta hos kor, framför allt vad gäller att identifiera halta kor, men de hade svårare att identifiera det värst drabbade benet. Det sågs en relativt stor variation i vilka fall som av majoriteten klassificerades som halta och vilka som bedömdes ha en lätt rörelsestörning, där fall med samma hältgrad klassificerades olika. Ytterligare studier krävs för att kunna dra tydliga slutsatser kring vid vilken grad av rörelsestörning svenska bönder anser en ko vara halt. I de fall där enkätdeltagarna ansåg en ko vara halt eller ha ett onormalt rörelsemönster valde majoriteten oftast antingen att undersöka kon inom de kommande dagarna eller att avvakta tills vidare. Enkätdeltagarna ansåg generellt att kor med allvarligare hälta skulle undersökas inom några dagar medan lindrigare hältor ofta klassificerades som rörelsestörningar och inte alltid ansågs kräva åtgärder. Mindre erfarna enkätdeltagare verkade mindre benägna att kalla en ko för halt jämfört med mer erfarna enkätdeltagare, och de mindre erfarna verkade även mer benägna att vilja avvakta undersökning av korna.
Bönderna i denna studie hade en god förmåga att bedöma hälta hos kor, men de hade relativt svårt att identifiera det värst drabbade benet. Det var en relativt stor variation i vilka fall som klassificerades som halta och vilka som bedömdes ha en lätt rörelsestörning. Ytterligare studier behövs för att vidare undersöka svenska bönders inställning till hälta och hur de bedömer hälta hos kor. Detta för att bilda en djupare förståelse för bästa sätt att gå till väga för att minska hältproblematiken hos svenska mjölkkor.

Lameness among cows is an important issue which affects both the welfare of the animals and the economy of the farmer. This thesis consisted of a video survey with the goal of examining Swedish cattle farmers’ ability to assess lameness in dairy cows. The aim of the study was to gain understanding of what degree of impaired mobility Swedish cattle farmers consider as lameness, how they handle cows with different degrees of lameness and when they consider cows with different lameness degrees to be in need of examination. How the answers differed between different levels of experience among the survey participants was also examined.
The survey consisted of seven background questions followed by 15 cases of lame or non-lame cows with accompanying video footage. A total of 71 people took part in the survey, of which 40 were included in the results. The results were compiled and analysed with descriptive statistics, and a Wilcoxon’s signed rank test was conducted. The survey showed that the study population had a good ability to assess lameness in cows, especially regarding the identification of lame cows, while they seemed to find it harder to identify the most affected leg. A relatively big variation was seen in which cases were classified as lame versus having a mild gait irregularity, where cases with the same lameness degree were classified differently by different participants. Further studies are necessary in order to be able to draw conclusions regarding at what degree of impaired mobility Swedish cattle farmers would consider a cow to be lame. In cases where survey participants considered a cow to be lame or have a mild gait irregularity, the majority often chose to either examine the cow within the next few days or to wait until further notice. In general, the survey participants believed that cows with more severe lameness should be examined within a few days, whereas cases of milder lameness were often classified as gait irregularities and were not always considered to require action. Less experienced participants seemed less likely to classify a cow as lame compared to participants with more experience, and less experienced participants also seemed more prone to postpone examination of the cows.
The farmers in this study had a good ability to assess lameness in cows, but they found it relatively difficult to identify the most affected leg. A relatively big variation was seen in which cases were classified as lame versus having a mild gait irregularity. Further studies are necessary to further investigate Swedish farmer’s’ attitudes towards lameness and how they assess lameness in cows. This is important for developing a deeper understanding of the best way forward to reduce lameness in Swedish dairy cows.
