Abstract
The movement patterns of an animal provide insight into space use, activity patterns and ecological requirements that are imperative for successful wildlife management practices. This study investigates the ecology of black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The objective was to analyze how environmental variables and seasonal changes influence jackal activity patterns and movements. Using photo-trapping data supplemented with meteorological data from 2015 to 2019, it was concluded that jackals exhibit distinct crepuscular and nocturnal activity peaks. This carnivor prefers an arid environment, with a preference for medium to high temperatures. Additionally, jackal activity was negatively influenced by rain and cloud cover. During the study, more individuals were also seen inside the park than outside, highlighting the importance of protected areas in providing refuges. This research aims to fill knowledge gaps and support conservation efforts on this species.
