Abstract

Studien omfattade 90 honkatter som kastrerades av veterinärstudenter på UDS smådjursklinik. Tanken med studien är att fastställa hur vanligt det är med komplikationer efter ovariehysterektomi hos honkatt utförd av veterinärstudenter, samt vilka komplikationer som förekommer mest frekvent. Honkatterna kastrerades under dissociativ anestesi via linea albasnitt. Två olika postoperativa analgesipreparat användes, 49 av katterna gavs tolfenaminsyra och 41 av katterna gavs meloxicam. Djurägarna kontaktades via telefon tio till tjugo dagar efter kastrationen för att svara på ett antal frågor om hur deras katt har mått postoperativt och om några komplikationer har tillstött. Den vanligaste komplikationen, som förekom hos 15,5 % av de opererade katterna, fanns vara svullnad utan inflammationstecken. Andra komplikationer som noterades var tecken på sårinfektion (4,8 %), vätskande sår (6,0 %), borttuggade suturer (4,8 %) och hematom (1,2 %). De totalt 32,3 % katter som drabbats av någon av ovanstående komplikation visade sig även vara smärtpåverkade. Däremot var ingen av de katter som inte drabbats av någon komplikation smärtpåverkade postoperativt.

The study included a total of 90 female cats that were castrated by veterinary students at the University small animal hospital in Uppsala. The purpose of this study was to determinate how common postoperative complication to ovariohysterectomy, performed by veterinarian students is, and which complications that is seen most often. The castrations were performed under dissociative anesthesia via midline approach. Two different kinds of postoperative analgesia were given, 49 of the cats were given tolfenamic acid and 41 of the cats were given meloxicam. The cat owners were contacted ten to twenty days after the castration to answer some question regarding how their cat had been doing after the operation and if any complications had occurred. The most frequent complication (15,5 %) was found to be swelling without any signs of inflammation. Other complications noted were signs of wound infection (4,8 %), wound discharge (6,0 %), chewed of sutures (4,8 %) and hematoma (1,2 %). In total 32,3 % of the cats suffered from one of the complications above, all of these cats also showed signs of pain. However none of the cats without postoperative complications showed signs of pain.
