Abstract

Agri-food systems with high production and consumption of animal products are some of the largest contributors to climate change and environmental degradation. Diets heavy in animal products also have severe consequences for health and longevity. In Sweden the consumption is above the global average and new nutritional national guidelines are promoting reduced meat and increased legume consumption to improve health. Legumes are also a more climate friendly food to produce and has positive effects on the surrounding agricultural environment. Therefore, there are benefits to gain if Sweden increase its domestic legume production. This study looked at what the predispositions were for Sweden to increase its legume production and if an increase could be in line with agroecological principles, which put ecological, social, and economic sustainability at the centre. Results showed that there are implications that there can and will be increased legume production in Sweden. There are however hurdles to overcome if it is to be in line with agroecological principles.
