Abstract

Denna studie undersöker hur små och medelstora företag (SME) upplever och hanterar utmaningar i att utveckla och genomföra hållbarhetsstrategier. Genom en kvalitativ, komparativ fallstudie av två SMEs i olika branscher analyseras hur externa krav, såsom nya regelverk och kundförväntningar, samspelar med interna resurser som kompetens, struktur och ekonomi.

Studien visar att hållbarhetsarbete i SME ofta drivs av behovet av struktur, kontroll och affärsnytta snarare än värderingsstyrda ambitioner. Samtidigt påverkar företagens verksamhetsförutsättningar vilka strategier som formas. Det ena företaget arbetar främst utifrån ekonomiska drivkrafter genom utveckling av tekniska hållbarhetsverktyg, medan det andra har ett mer långsiktigt och internt fokuserat arbetssätt med satsningar på struktur, kompetens och kommunikation.

Genom att kombinera institutionell teori och resursbaserad teori visar studien att en framgångsrik hållbarhetsstrategi kräver både yttre påtryckningar och intern kapacitet. Studien bidrar därmed med ett teoretiskt ramverk som förklarar hur SME kan navigera mellan legitimitetssökande anpassning och effektivt resursutnyttjande.

Eftersom studien baseras på ett begränsat urval bör resultaten ses som illustrativa, snarare än generellt överförbara till andra kontexter. Fortsatt forskning behövs för att utveckla anpassade och praktiskt användbara verktyg som stödjer hållbar omställning inom olika typer av SME.

This study explores how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) perceive and manage challenges in developing and implementing sustainability strategies. Through a qualitative, comparative case study of two SMEs from different industries, the analysis focuses on how external demands, such as new regulations and customer expectations, interact with internal resources such as competence, structure, and financial capacity.

The study shows that sustainability efforts in SMEs are often driven by the need for structure, control, and business value rather than values-based ambitions. At the same time, the companies’ operational conditions influence the strategies they adopt. One company is primarily driven by economic incentives through the development of technical sustainability tools, while the other takes a more long-term, internally focused approach, emphasizing investments in structure, competence, and communication.

By combining institutional theory and resource-based theory, the study demonstrates that a successful sustainability strategy requires both external pressure and internal capacity. It thus contributes a theoretical framework explaining how SMEs can navigate between legitimacy-seeking adaptation and effective use of resources.

As the study is based on a limited sample, the findings should be viewed as illustrative rather than generally transferable to other contexts. Further research is needed to develop tailored and practically applicable tools that support sustainable transitions in different types of SMEs.
