Abstract

Hållbarhet inom energisektorn har blivit en allt mer central fråga i takt med ökande klimatförändringar. Samhällets förväntningar på energiföretag att ta ansvar för miljön och frångå traditionella affärsmodeller växer ständigt. Företagen har en viktig roll i att bidra till uppfyllandet av EU:s hållbarhetsmål, särskilt inom ramen för Agenda 2030. Trots detta finns det begränsat med material kring hur omställningen till ett långsiktigt hållbart samhälle påverkar verksamheterna inom energisektorn, samt hur dessa företag effektivt kan anpassa sig till nya krav.

Agenda 2030, som antogs år 2015, utgör en uppsättning riktlinjer för hur energiföretag bör agera för att utvecklas i en mer hållbar riktning. Denna uppsats behandlar frågeställningen hur företag inom energisektorn upplever att deras lönsamhet har påverkats av de internationella hållbarhetsmålen. Vidare undersöks hur företagen har agerat för att anpassa sin verksamhet till de nya krav som följer av dessa mål. Uppsatsen belyser också vilka utmaningar och möjligheter energiföretagen ser i utvecklingen av nya strategier kopplade till internationella hållbarhetsmål. Undersökningen är en fallstudie av ett svenskt energiföretag och bygger på en kvalitativ forskningsmetod. Empirin består av två semistrukturerade intervjuer med anställda på Vattenfall, samt en hållbarhetsredovisning och tre årsredovisningar från företaget.

Sammanfattningsvis visar uppsatsens resultat, att Vattenfall Vattenkraft AB har lyckats anpassa sig till hållbarhetsmålen utan att tappa sin ekonomiska bärkraft, men att omställningen kräver långsiktig planering, innovation och samverkan på flera nivåer. Därför är slutsatsen att en hållbar omställning inom kapitalintensiva branscher är möjlig, men förutsätter att ekonomiska och miljömässiga mål integreras strategiskt i verksamhetens kärna och att företaget har kapacitet att balansera kortsiktig effektivitet med långsiktiga hållbarhetsambitioner.

Sustainability within the energy sector has become an increasingly central issue in light of growing climate change. Society’s expectations on energy companies to take responsibility for the environment and move away from traditional business models are continuously increasing. Companies play an important role in contributing to the fulfillment of the EU’s sustainability goals, particularly within the framework of Agenda 2030. Despite this, there is limited material on how the transition to a long-term sustainable society affects operations within the energy sector, as well as how these companies can effectively adapt to new demands.

Agenda 2030, adopted in 2015, provides a set of guidelines for how energy companies should act to evolve in a more sustainable direction. This study addresses the question of how companies within the energy sector perceive that their profitability has been affected by the international sustainability goals. Furthermore, it examines how companies have acted to adapt their operations to the new requirements resulting from these goals. The study also highlights what challenges and opportunities energy companies see in developing new strategies related to international sustainability objectives. The research is a case study of a Swedish energy company and is based on a qualitative research method. The empirical data consists of two semi-structured interviews with employees at Vattenfall, as well as one sustainability report and three annual reports from the company.

In summary, the study's results show that Vattenfall Vattenkraft AB has successfully adapted to the sustainability goals without losing its economic viability, but that the transition requires long-term planning, innovation, and collaboration on multiple levels. Therefore, the conclusion is that a sustainable transition within capital-intensive industries is possible, but it requires that economic and environmental goals are strategically integrated into the core of the business, and that the company has the capacity to balance short-term efficiency with long-term sustainability ambitions.
