Abstract

Medicinering vid sjukdomstillstånd i det främre segmentet av ögat hos häst är ofta tidskrävande och komplicerat för djurägaren. Syftet med studien var att undersöka om ett nytt tekniskt hjälpmedel, en spiral som kallas OphthaCoil, fungerar för långtidsmedicinering hos häst. Två olika designer på spiraler utvärderades. Efter en ögonundersökning placerades en spiral i nedre konjunktivalsäcken och hästen observerades till dess spiralen trillade ur. Resultaten visar att ingen av de använda designerna låg kvar tillräckligt länge för att kunna användas för en längre tids behandling. Hästarna var obesvärade under hela försöket och biverkningar kunde endast noteras på en av hästarna, varför vi tror att det är intressant att göra vidare studier med nya designer.

Medication of the anterior segment of the eye of the horse is often time-consuming and complicated for the owner. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a new drug delivery device, an OphthaCoil, works for long-term medication in horses. Two different designs of the device were evaluated. After an eye examination, the OphthaCoil was placed in the lower conjunctival sac and the horse was observed until the OphthaCoil fell out. The results show that none of the designs employed, stayed in the conjuntival sac long enough to be useful under clinical conditions. The horses were essentially untroubled throughout the trials and adverse effects were only observed in one of the horses. Hence, we think our results warrant further studies with new designs of the device.
