Abstract

stil.

The park of Villa Giacomina is located 5 kilometer north of Lidköping. The city itself has today spread and almost surrounds the park. This master thesis focuses on the history of Villa Giacomina through a garden perspective. What the environment contains today as far as vegetation and built structures are concerned – as well as a concept for future conservation and restoration. The first chapter deals with the use of the park through the centuries. In 1979, when the responsibility and management of the park were taken over by the city of Lidköping; it also became an historic listed building.
In the park each person and era has left their imprint; it is therefore possible to use Villa Giacomina as a looking glass to understand the garden history in Sweden from the late 18th century into our time, the early 21th century. In this case, with Villa Giacomina, and the from time to time insufficient data basis, it is also interesting to do the opposite. That is to analyze through garden archeological traces and what is maintained in other parks from the same
period, if there might be resemblances with this park of Villa Giacomina.
The park was constructed in the late 18th century and the location was controlled by the topography and the slope against the lake Vänern and the bay of Kinnekulle, the hilly ground and the number of old trees. The park was built as a part of a hermitage of Claes Julius Ekeblad, a retired member of the court of King Gustaf III. Growing up at the nearby manor Stola, Claes Julius Ekeblad moved back to Västergötland for a life in harmony with nature.
In 1812, after the death of Claes Julius his nephew Gustaf Piper, inspired by Italy, develops the park towards a stricter park with cut hedges and a new classic style main building.
During the late 19th century, the park declined and was not restored until the second decade of the 20th century when the manor had a new owner who renovated the buildings and hired the garden architect Rudolf Abelin to do the gardens. The work of Abelin is not conserved in drawings but in contemporary photos a garden reminding a lot of Abelin’s other gardens from the same time can be seen. There is a clear symmetric axle, a nice subtle transition formed as
a rhododendron valley between the strict garden, surrounding the building and the leafy park.
Exotic trees were also placed on different locations in the park. Abelin’s work at Villa Giacomina was made in the 1910s.
In the 1930s the park and the main building was again renovated, when among other reparations the two verandas on the both facades of the main building were removed. The
ownership of the park is in the same family Danielsson from 1940 to 1979 when the municipality assumes the responsibility of the park.

Today Villa Giacomina and its surroundings possess high values as far as cultural history is
concerned, but also represent important biological and recreational values. There is a
vegetation with several old trees and traces of earlier constructions; alleys, exotic trees and the
interplay between the garden and the houses.
Today, as a public park, the numbers of visitors put the park in a new situation. The inventory
is presented as lists of plants, photographs, sketches and written reports. After an analysis of
the values of the park and the problems of today with biodiversity and the context of the park,
a proposal for the over-all guidelines and measures follows. These guidelines emphasize to a great extent the historic values as these have been slightly overshadowed by the recreational values lately, but we also seek to protect the biological values of which the most important is
the old trees and their capacity of house holding very rare lichens. The most important in the maintenance of the park today and for the future is to clarify the existing structures; to maintain and strengthen the aesthetic values by filling in missing trees in the alleys; to keep the shoreline open and clear and with awareness divide the open areas from the closed. Another important factor in understanding the park is the contact between the main building and the surrounding park, this contact must not be entirely erased but exist at least as a visual bound.
