Abstract

This thesis explores the concept of landscape heritage as a tool in the
design process of an educational park in rural southeastern Spain, to
develop natural and cultural values at the site. Themes discussed
include medicinal plants, wildfire, erosion, biodiversity and
culture. We consider the field of heritage as having the potential
to unify relevant topics and themes in the thesis. The concept of
landscape heritage also allows us to define a vision for the project
site, handle the many challenges and fulfil the clients requests.
We have attempted to approach this work from a holistic perspective,
understanding the landscape as a whole. This has been of particular
importance since the design project was located in a setting unfamiliar
to us, and was achieved through an understanding of landscape
heritage. The methods used to answer the research questions
were multiple, including research through design, landscape analysis,
field work, literature studies, site visits and dialogues. Based on
the results of the study, it has been concluded that landscape
heritage can, in the context of a design process, support in ways
to understand and to identify values in the landscape, as well
as to inspire.
