Abstract

Denna uppsats handlar om Damascene-husens atriumgårdar som kan beskrivas som en liten
plats men en stor värld på grund av historien, kulturen och betydelsen de har för den syriska
befolkningen i helhet och för världen i allmänhet. Damascene-husens atriumgårdar består av
många element såsom Iwan, ornament och ett specifikt växtmaterial. Dessa atriumgårdar har
en tydligt anknytning till islam som religion och till islamsträdgårdskonst, därför har detta
visat den tydliga kopplingen mellan Damascene-husens atriumgårdarna och Europas
trädgårdar för att islamsträdgårdskonst har påverkat både Damaskus och Europa. För att göra
detta arbete har många språk och typer av källor används. Sökningar på arabiska, engelska
och svenska gjordes och en analys av foto och filmer gjordes. För utförandet av detta arbete
har också en analys av litteratur gjorts för att dels se kopplingen mellan atriumgårdarna i
Damaskus och trädgårdar i Europa, och dels för att samla relevant information om just
atriumgårdarna och inte hela Damascene-huset. Slutligen detta arbete syftar till att öka
förståelsen för idealen som Damascene-husens atriumgårdar bär och hur dessa ideal har
spridit sig till Europa. Ett annat syfte med detta arbete är att ge svenska landskapsarkitekter
en inspirationskälla som kan användas vid skapandet av platser som ska upplevas mer
inkluderande och integrerade för olika kulturer.

This study is about the courtyards of the Damascene houses which can be described as a
small place but a big world because of the history, culture and significance they have for the
Syrian population as a whole and for the world in general. The courtyards of the Damascene
houses consist of many elements such as Iwan, ornaments and a specific plant material. These
courtyards have a clear connection to Islam as a religion and to Islamic garden art therefore
this has shown the clear connection between the courtyards of the Damascene houses and the
garden of Europe because Islamic garden art has influenced both Damascus and Europe. To
do this study, many languages and types of sources have been used. There searches in Arabic,
English and Swedish have been made and an analysis of photos and films has been made. For
the execution of this work, an analysis of literature has also been done to first see the
connection between the courtyards in Damascus and gardens in Europe and second to gather
relevant information about the courtyards in particular and not the entire Damascene house.
Finally, this work aims to increase the understanding of the ideals carried by the courtyards of
the Damascene houses and how these ideals have spread to Europe. Another purpose of this
work is to give Swedish landscape architects a source of inspiration that can be used when
creating places that should be experienced as more inclusive and integrated for different
cultures.
